Training in Piercing Studios: An Industry Snapshot

We need your voice.

For years, our industry has debated training.

We talk about what apprentices should learn, how long it should take, and what good mentorship looks like. But most of those conversations are based on personal experience and opinion. We don’t have much real data about how studios across the industry are actually training people.

That’s what this research project is trying to change.

I’m collecting survey responses from piercers, studio owners and managers, and front-of-house professionals to build a clearer picture of training practices across our industry. The results will be presented as a research poster at the 2026 APP Conference in Las Vegas, where you’ll be able to see how your studio’s approach compares with others.

This project is for all of us. The more people who participate, the more useful and meaningful the data will be.

Who should fill this out?

There are three separate surveys. Choose the one that fits your role best. If you wear more than one hat (for example, piercer and studio owner), you’re welcome to complete more than one — each survey asks slightly different questions.

Most people finish in about 15 minutes, though some spend longer. This is your chance to really reflect on your experience.

why participate

Everyone who completes a survey by March 30, 2026 will receive early access to the full research results before they’re presented at the APP Conference. You’ll be able to see how your studio’s training practices compare with others across the industry.

Participants will also be entered to win:

A full 2026 APP Conference pass — or $500 if you’re already registered, unable to attend, or simply prefer the cash.

To enter the drawing, just leave your name and email at the end of the survey.

One winner will be drawn March 31, 2026.

About this research

This survey was designed and conducted by Crystal Sims — co-founder of Evolution Body Piercing in Albuquerque, certified life coach, and longtime industry educator. Crystal has been teaching studio owners and piercers since 2002.

This research is part of her ongoing work to help piercing studios build stronger training systems, develop their people, and run businesses that are easier to manage — without burning everything (and everyone) out in the process.
